What Is Thanksgiving Day?
Thanksgiving Day is drawing near, but many Chinese people don’t know what Thanksgiving Day is. Thanksgiving Day is an extremely vital American, traditional holiday. It is on the fourth Thursday of November every year that the whole family gathers together to have a big dinner and eat turkey. It is similar to the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, which celebrates a bumper harvest.
Many Puritans who were unwilling to put up with the persecution from the British domestic religion arrived in America on a boat, called the Mayflower. They met difficulties they never imaged. Some froze to death or starved to death during the winter of 1620. There were only 50 survivors after they arrived in America.
At this time, the kindhearted Native American Indians brought a large quantity of necessities for life and taught them how to hunt for animals, catch fish and plant corn. With the help of the Indians, the migrants managed to reap great harvests. They created Thanksgiving Day because they wanted to thank the Indians and invite the Indians to celebrate the holiday.
From then on, Thanksgiving Day has been a regular holiday when individuals have gotten together to give thanks and celebrate with their families. However, the first Thanksgiving Day didn't have its own permanent date. The states decided the time of the holiday every year until President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving Day a national holiday in 1863.

Every year, when Thanksgiving is coming, I can always hear a song named “Appreciative Heart”. Although I have heard it many many times, each time I get a new understanding of it. Each year the school holds various kinds of activities, but I think the most important thing is just to be thankful. There are many people in the world I should be thankful to. I should be thankful to my parents, because they gave me life and brought me up. I should be thankful to my sister, because she didn’t go to school in order to look after me. I should be thankful to my friends as they bring me so much pleasure. Too many people, too many things to appreciate. However, the person I am the most thankful to is a person I met only once.
He was a businessman from Jiangsu province. He was kind, friendly and a little handsome. I remember the only time we met was after I graduated from high school. He came to our school from far away and paid for ten students to go to a university. Fortunately, I was one of them, and he donates five thousand yuan to each of us every year until we graduate from the university. Although he is very busy, he still spends some time asking about our lives and study. He pays for almost all of our tuition. Nobody forced him to do that; he is absolutely willing to help us. We didn't know him, but he helped us find a way into the world of knowledge. No words can express my gratitude to him. Here I want to make use of this Thanksgiving day to express my feelings to him, “thank you, the best gift I can give you in return is to study hard”.
However, I don’t want to have to wait for festivals to thank the ones closest to me, as well as the ones so easily overlooked. If I have learned anything about giving thanks, it is this: give it now! While your feeling of appreciation is alive and sincere, act on it. Saying thank you is such an easy way to add to the world’s happiness.
